How to write a UK CV that gets interviews
The UK CV format
A UK CV usually runs to two pages of A4. It starts with your contact details and a short personal profile, followed by your work experience in reverse chronological order, education, skills and, optionally, a line on references. This builder uses A4 paper and UK conventions by default.
No photo, no date of birth
Under the Equality Act 2010, UK employers shouldn't make decisions based on age, nationality or appearance, so a photo, date of birth or marital status don't belong on your CV. The UK format leaves them out automatically.
A personal profile that sells you
In 3–4 sentences, sum up who you are, your experience, your key strengths and what you're looking for. Tailor it to each role you apply for.
Achievements, not just duties
Write one line per achievement and start with a strong verb: “Reduced customer complaints by 25%”, “Managed a £200k annual budget”. Numbers make your impact easy to see.
Getting past applicant tracking systems
Job boards such as Indeed, Reed and Totaljobs, and most large employers, screen CVs with software first. This builder creates a real-text PDF the software can read. Use the Classic template and keywords from the job advert for the best results.
Tip: “References available on request” is standard in the UK and saves space. You'll find the option in the References section.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. Build, edit and download your CV as a PDF as many times as you like, with no watermark and no paywall. The site is supported by ads.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There's no sign-up and no email required.
Should I put a photo on my CV in the UK?
No. Photos aren't expected on UK CVs, so the UK format leaves them out automatically.
How long should a UK CV be?
Two pages of A4 is the norm. Graduates and people with less experience can often fit it on one.
What's the difference between a CV and a resume?
In the UK you send a CV; in the US it's called a resume and is usually shorter. Use our US page if you're applying in the United States.
Where is my data stored?
Only in your browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to any server.
